A novel by Lois Lowry |

A symbol in literature is a thing that represents something bigger than itself. Listed below are some symbols in Number The Stars. The Star of David was the symbol of Jewish faith. Jews were persecuted for their religious beliefs. The woods that Annemarie went through to deliver the basket to her uncle symbolized a test of bravery. The handkerchief in the basket that Annemarie was bringing to Uncle Henrik was actually used by smugglers to throw off the dogs who were sniffing for humans on the boats. The necklace that Annemarie ripped from Ellen’s neck when the soldiers searched her house was a symbol of friendship and hope that Annemarie’s friend would return from Sweden. Annemarie will wear the necklace until they meet again.
