Annemarie Johansen was the main character in the story. She is 10 years old blond, athletic girl who saves her best friend from the German Nazis by ripping her Jewish star necklace off her neck and pretending to be her sister. Ellen Rosen, Annemarie’s best friend is stocky and has dark hair and eyes. Ellen is scared to be separated from her parents later in the story, and has to be brave to be away from them for a little while. Kirsten Johansen was Annemarie’s little sister who was innocent in the war and was the one who talked back to the Nazis. Henrik, Kirsten and Annemarie’s uncle, smuggles the Jews to Sweden where it was safe. Henrik was Mrs. Johansen’s younger brother. Lise Johansen was a member of the Resistance with Peter Neilsen, to fight against the Jews. Later in the story, Lise and Peter got married but were killed by the Germans. Lise died in 1941, being shot by Nazis. The Rosens, Ellen’s parents, are the ones to get smuggled to Sweden for safety. |
